04: Workshopmaking a documentary film based on an object

By using objects or family photos brought by participants, and showing extracts from her film ” Leur Algérie”, Lina Soualem attempts to demonstrate that, unlike press reports, documentary films construct a critical distance and a subjective, singular point of view. Although documentaries film reality, they don’t simply place a camera in front of which reality scrolls by, but they question it from an assertive subjective point of view. It’s not about informing viewers, it’s about conveying a singular experience. The approach of making a documentary based on an intimate object serves as a starting point that enables the young participants to embrace and better understand this subjectivity, so that they can shape it and convey it.
